A pointe shoe is a type of shoe worn by dancers en pointe (on the tips of their toes), to appear weightless and graceful. The main parts of the shoe include the shank and box, which support the dancer and allow them to be on their toes. Pointe shoe are sized uniquely to any other type of dance shoe, which is why dance companies often make many different styles to accommodate the many types of feet.
